The Golden Demons fell to #15 Wilburton last night in the first round of the area tournament 63-51. The boys program ends their 2016-17 campaign with a 17-9 overall record. Beggs accomplished many things this year and most would say they even exceeded expectations. The young Demon Squad won the Area 3 District 8 championship for the third straight year with a 74-60 victory over Hartshorne. The Demons also took home hardware from every tournament they were in this year. Beggs took home a consolation championship trophy in the Inola Tournament in December with a victory over Holland Hall. They then went on to place 3rd in the Beggs Under Armour Classic in January with a victory over Stilwell. The boys then took home a 3rd place trophy in the Okmulgee County Tournament with a 84-41 victory over Henryetta. Beggs finished with a 7-3 conference record and finished third in the standings behind Checotah and Kellyville who split the conference title.
Senior leader Ira Blackbear who averaged 16.6 points per game led the Demons all year. Blackbear not only led the team in points but assists as well. Junior guard and Beggs newcomer EJ Smoot was the Demons second leading scorer averaging just under 16 points per game. “This team was a joy to coach day in and day out and they were absolutely a fun group to watch play. I was very blessed to come in to a great situation and to have this kind of success in my first year. I am blessed to be a Beggs Demon.” Coach Nagel said. The future looks very bright for the young Beggs squad only losing one senior and returning four starters for the 2017-18 season.
